Precisely. The media almost always writes as if the 2% inflation mandate was set by congress or has some super long precedent rather than being pulled out of Bernanke’s … um, hat? … in 2011. They can, of course, redefine this magic number as they please. I’m a skeptic that the Fed will be willing to continue “tightening” if unemployment spikes up even a little.
actually, the 2% inflation idea came from new Zealand in the last 80's when RBNZ Governor Donald Brash, in trying to get inflation down from double digits picked a number that seemed very low at the time but potentially realistic. and it has taken a life of its own since then
